Telling Good from Evil

Are the riots all over the country causing you concern? Do you look at the news reports on TV, in the paper an

d on social media and wonder why the rioters are keeping it up night after night? And do you wonder why the elected officials in those cities don’t take action to put a stop to them? In my job as a financial planner I am always asking myself if what I’m doing on behalf of a client is the right thing for him. Viewing everything from an ethics standpoint has always served me well. And being a person of faith, I do see events in the prism of good and evil. I believe good is what produces peace and beauty. Whether it’s a natural landscape created by God, or a beautiful building or cityscape built by man, one can look at those things and say “that is good.” I do not believe evil has the ability to produce beauty. It can purchase beauty, but it can’t create it. People who are evil can purchase a beautiful home or a beautiful car and say “look at these beautiful things I own, don’t look at what I did to get them.” Evil, in my opinion, can only create chaos and destruction, or it can allow it to happen. So, looking again at the cities where the riots are going on, what do the places look like after the riots? They are ugly, burned out, graffiti stained dangerous places. Does that say “good”, or does that say “evil?” The mayors in those cities that hold back their own police departments from stopping the riots, are they doing good, or are they doing evil by allowing evil to descend upon their cities? Could that evil be visited upon my city, or yours? I have actually considered buying enough plywood to have cut to cover all the windows and doors to my office building, because I don’t know if my mayor would stop such a mob action like what happened in Kenosha. Maybe he would. I certainly hope so. But why should a thought like that even enter my mind? It never has before. This is America! There is more opportunity to do well here than there is anywhere else in the world. That’s why so many people from around the world want to move here, and why so few people want to leave. Even the rioters who hate America are not offering to leave. Where would they go… and who would want them? I know I am old, and white, and male, and Christian, and southern. And maybe I don’t understand things the way others with different experiences do. But I do understand good vs. evil, peace vs. chaos, beauty vs. destruction. I just wish the rioters realized the evil they are perpetuating on our land at this time.
